Star Weekly was a weekly magazine published in Jakarta in Indonesian by Keng Po, the second-most popular daily newspaper among peranakan Chinese. It offered news, opinion and features to peranakan Chinese as well to a wider public. P. K. Oyong was the Chief Editor of Star Weekly who later co-founded Kompas, the largest and most popular newspaper in Indonesia. It covered a vast range of topics including political analysis, world news, social issues, sport, cooking, and entertainment.
Star weekly was particularly important for Chinese Indonesian history because it was the place where the assimilationist movement published their ideas. The assimilationist group urged Chinese Indonesian to participate actively in “ethnically inclusive” organisations and must dissociate socially and culturally from Chinese traditions. Star weekly was closed due to the oppressive political atmosphere in 1961.
