If you have an interest in Botany, Australia and the colonial period, is it likely that you have encountered the 7-volume behemoth on Australia Flora, Flora Australiensis, which was published between 1863 and 1878 by George Bentham, with the assistance of Ferdinand von Muller.
The botanical compendium is amongst the most famous scientific publications to come from the Royal Botanic Garden, Kew and is the first completed analysis of any large continent, describing 8125 species of Flora in its pages.
This publication was originally released as an unillustrated work and covers the taxonomy of genus devised at the time. Both Bentham and Mueller were incredibly important scientific minds of their time and their collaboration is truly stupendous work.
