Title
Swift & his times (1667-1745): an exhibition of material from the Rare Book Collection. Monash University Library, 2 June - 21 August 1994
Description
The exhibition was held in the Rare Books Exhibition space, Sir Louis Matheson Library, Monash University from 2 June - 21 August 1994. The nucleus of the Monash Rare Book Collection is its Swift collection. There was an Exhibition held in 1990 of this material, catalogues are still available on request. The basic collection was purchased from Swift scholar, Dr. David Woolley in 1961 when Monash University first opened. It is very much a live collection; books, manuscripts, and engravings are regularly purchased. The development of the collection goes ahead on many fronts, and in this exhibition we have tried to emphasise the general strengths of our early eighteenth century holdings. The intention has been to place Swift in the circle of his friends, enemies, influences, and acquaintances; evoking the intellectual and cultural life from which Swift, and other writers such as Pope, Gay, and Lady Montagu drew their nourishment.
