Presbyteri Iohannis, sive, Abissinorum Imperii Descriptio (A representation of the Empire of Prester John or of the Abyssinians)

Date Created

Date Issued

1960

Description

This is a map of Ethiopia as conceived in the 16th c. and associated with the Prester John legend probably resulting from the accounts of 16th c. Portuguese travellers. The position of the country is reasonably correct, but the details shown of the interior are not. The eastern part, shown with many rivers, is in fact mainly desert, no account seems to have been taken of the mountainous plateau that covers the greater part of the country and the path of the Nile is quite wrong.
