Description

Tekia Haymanot (13th c. saint) is remembered in folklore particularly for standing on one leg for a very long time so that the other dropped off, but in history had a major influence on the spread of Christianity in his time and was counsellor to King Yekuno Amlak. The original slide was taken during a three-week visit to Ethiopia and Eritrea undertaken during Elliott Forsyth’s study leave in 1959, from the University of Adelaide. Elliott used the images in the collection extensively for lectures on "Ethiopia: the Land of Prester John"
