Description

Catalogue of an exhibition held at 200 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy, Victoria, April 7 - May 6 2000.
Thomas Deverall's Rise & Fall revisited the Roman Circus as a template for our enduring preoccupation with collective ritual acts of spectatorship. In this exhibition, the Colosseum, the prototypical sports arena, was encounted as a fabricated model. This empty theatre, devoid of performers and audience, became the object of aesthetic attention. Intricately constructed from cardboard, Rise & Fall engaged contemporary and historical representation of public arena in order to elaborate upon the contemporary fascination with the rituals of competition, performance and public spectacle.
