Title
[Convict record of Robert Dane]
Description
An original convict manuscript record written for Robert Dane (b. 1820). He was court martialled and convicted of mutinous conduct whilst serving as a soldier on 11 March 1840. Transported for life, he left Dublin on 16 December, 1840 on the convict ship British Sovereign and arrived at Hobart, Van Diemen's Land, on 17 March 1841. There is a physical description which includes a record of his tattoos, and his temperament. Episodes of disobedience, insubordination, and misconduct along with resulting punishments are documented. He may have been held initially at Richmond Gaol in Hobart but in September 1842 was sent to the penal settlement at Port Arthur. Following more periods of solitary confinement and hard labour he arrived on the penal colony of Norfolk Island on 28 June 1850. Dane remained there until 1853, when he was returned to Hobart, where the record closes.
